About Syngué Sabour

Completed in 2023, Syngué Sabour Cottage is a bit of an "architectural surprise", in an Africa that has somewhat forgotten the phase of its history, where "Settlers" built homes that were reminiscent of European country homes, "adapted" the homes to the climate and more specifically the need to circulate tropical breezes under high ceilings and through louver shutters and in an act of nostalgia brought cherished items, of furniture, tableware, lighting and the like in their trunks.

The major difference between the source of the original inspiration and Syngué Sabour Cottage is the spacious, immaculate verandas and external areas, the true heart of life at the tropic, overlooking a new world, furnished with "indulgent" shapes on which to “relax” rather than “sit” with a drink in hand at the end of the day.

The Cottage

Owned and developed by architectural and interior design duo Claudio Modola and Andrea Mathison, every angle of the cottage has been studied and customized. All of the interior; fabrics, artwork, sanitaryware, lighting, linen, rugs, etc have been imported whilst much of the solid hardwood furniture was designed by the pair and produced piece by piece by different regional craftsmen.

The main cottage has been described on several occasions as a “small perfectly formed jewel”. The central living space has double aspect openings and 6 m ceiling heights to maximize natural ventilation. The tall beach-facing doors open onto the seafront veranda and overlook a combed sand garden before the beach. The rear doors open onto a garden of mature acacia trees.

An elaborate double bed is positioned off the central internal living space which is serviced by an elegant bathroom and walk-in closet. The final room inside the cottage is the fully equipped kitchen which serves the beachfront dining area directly through large louver windows.

The cottage is surrounded by contained plant beds filled with tropical vegetation and connected by open-air terraces that border the saline plunge pool.

Adjacent to the main cottage overlooking the pool and also with a sea view is the guest cottage, a small independent bedroom suite with its ensuite bathroom, walk-in closet, and Juliet-style veranda to the rear, ensuring perfect privacy for two couples.

The beach is approximately 20 meters in front of the property and the property enjoys 180-degree uninterrupted views of the ocean. At high water, the seawater rhythmically laps against the sea wall.

The property is, as any property recently built should be, completely off the grid, with its own solar and desalination systems.

The new project for 2024 will be to create an in-house vegetable garden to further support the Syngué Sabour kitchen’s organic menu.

Syngué Sabour is purposely designed to accommodate a maximum of 4 guests with a superior level of service.  Due to having two double beds, the property is particularly suited towards two couples. Families are welcome, however children under the age of eight are not admitted, the property is simply not suitable for them.
